Winter Break to Championships: The Grey Area

Hello, East Distance fans, runners, alumni, and wakeup from your broken-bubble induced hibernations, because after a half month delay, the winter track racing season officially began. Christian Mele, brother of notable Leah Mele, recaps the first meet on January 2nd below:
This was the introduction that I made 2 months ago after I asked Christian to do the blog post for the first race after winter break. After about 2 months of waiting for a finalized post, I am posting this quasi-halfway-there recap for all the meets after the break and before sectionals. I look forward to seeing Ben Dillon’s and Dan Helfand’s posts next year. Here’s Christian:
Looks like I was designated as the blogger for last weeks track meet on 1/2/13 at Toms River all thnx to the all mighty and powerful Bruce! This is my first blog post so treat me well! I just wanted to start off by apologizing for the lateness of this post which was due last week. I just got the chance to type right now while biking due to an injury! Back to the main topic, last weeks meet was of vital importance to the team and everyone did a great job! Dan H, and Jared D stood out amongst the competitors during they're DMR and the 4x800 both showing tremendous effort and endurance! Dan H. ran a _____ during the _____ for the DMR while he also ran a ____ on the 4x800. Jared ran a ____ during the ____ for the DMR and also ran a____ for the 4x800! Mike W. did a great job as well during the 4x800 and the 4x400, running a 2:16 for the 4x8 and a _____ for the 4x4! Chris Arnold had a impressive time of ___ during his 800 DMR while I don't really want to talk about my time for the 4x8  .My memory can only go so far back but I believe that was everyone, but please inform me if I missed anyone on the distance team! Once again, everyone had a great race and put 100% into they're events! Thank you for reading my post and hope that everyone is training hard! Also, good luck to all those racing on 1/9/13 at Haddonfield and the upcoming meets.
-Christian Mele
Note: Christian blanked on some of the times, if anyone has them, let me know.
On Monday, January 7th, several members of the distance team hiked up to Tom’s River to the standing albeit tattered bubble to do some racing. Ben Dillon and Mike Minion lined up for East first in the 1600m dash, running strong races for 4:45 and 4:39 finishes. Nice job, boys. Right after the 3 boys’ heats came 3 girls’ heats, one of which consisted of Gill Raines and Rebecca McCormack, who ran 6:23 and 6:16 respectively. An especially nice job was done by Rebecca, who stepped up and raced at the top of her pack.
Later in the meet, Jeff Braun and Michael Bruce stepped up to the line, the California start line specifically, to shimmy 800 meters. Expecting a fast start, and as they were seeded 2 and 3 in the race, they went out with the 1 seed, thinking that he’d start fast. Unfortunately, he did not and Bruce and Jeff were left to pick their ways through the pack, competitively. They ran 2:21 and 2:18, respectively. After at least 5 more heats of the 800m passed, Allie Smith stepped on the line. No, she was not in a boys’ race, but she was East’s lone female representative in the 800m. In said solitary conditions, she dropped a 2:50. Nice Job Allie.
That Wednesday, January the 9th, a final meet was held at Haddonfield for the winter; the only real highlight for the boys was Aaron Zucker’s 2:13.
Moving on, East Distance had a very successful day at the state relays; KBlanco (2:03), Dan Helfand (2:05), Ben Dillon (2:10), and Jared Dashevsky (2:09) for a time of 8:29 and 8th place overall in the 4x800m. Previously, however, Mike Minion (4:34), Dashevsky (3:23), Helfand (2:09) and Barry (51) ran to another 8th place finish in the DMR with the best time in memory of 10:57. Nice job boys.
On Monday, January 14th, several distance runners who had not raced on the previous Friday traveled to Tom’s River for another Olympic conference race. In the 1600, Chris “Jamar Javarison-Lamar” Arnold took out a huge lead and kept at least a slim lead over Sean “D’Squarius” Taylor to finish the race in first with a crusin’ 5:04. Sean took third with a 5:10. In the 800, Michael “J’Dinkalage” Wang dropped a 2:14, as he continues to drop his time by 1 second each race; you’ll be at sub-2 in just over 7 more miles of racing! Aaron “Zucker” Zucker continued to prove that his 2:13 was not an anomaly by replicating his pr from last year, keep up the hard work Zuckeroo. Earlier, 25 minutes after the Cherry Hillian bus arrived at the bubble, the boys 3200 went off, and with it Mike “Buckshank” Bruce. In his first 3200 in 21 months, he disappointingly ran a 10:44 after running the first mile close to 5 minute pace; I guess that’s what happens when you drop a 34 in the 5th 200 of the race, silly.  On a further note, Caroline Sawn ran to a strong finish with a 6:11 in the 1600m, just edging out Jill Raines, who dropped big time for a 6:13. Nice job girls.
Subsequently, 5 distance runners on Saturday the 19th once again traveled up to Tom’s River to possibly run the best races of their careers to this date. In the 800m, Chris Arnold dropped a 2:08, winning him 1st place in his heat; Wang continued in his “1 second per race” streak with a 2:13. In the 1600m, Jared Dashevsky and Dan Helfand both ran to 4:39s, with Jared (3rd) edging out Dan (4th) at the end; thank the lord, for we’d never hear the end of it if Dan had won. In the 3200, Ben Dillon (9:46) and Mike Minion (9:50) dropped huge time for great races, coming in a narrow 2nd and third, respectively; nice job Mike on shattering 10 minutes for the first time. Nice job Ben for negative splitting at each mile.
That Wednesday, a group of distance runners journeyed through the potent, oil-slicked meadow lands of North Jersey to race at the Armory; nearly every distance runner was in attendance. Unfortunately, however, the day was marked by a general lack of accomplishment in the 1600m in spite of great success in the Varsity DMR. In the 1600, Michael Bruce led the team with a 5-flat finish, which was followed by Jeff Braun’s 5:12 and Sean Taylor’s 5:14 in the same race. One of the few notable 1600 highlights of the meet was Jason Decker’s 5:26, which tied his PR in conditions that, for whatever reason, threw everyone else off. Nonetheless, the Varsity DMR ran like “bull[s] on steroids” –Benjamin Dillon, dropped 5 seconds for a 10:52; the race consisted of BAD’s 3:21, KBlanco’s dependable 51, Dan Halfend’s 2:05, and Mike Minion’s 4:35. Great job DMR.
The very next day, another (smaller) group of individuals traveled to Tom’s River for another Olympic Conference meet; while we took a small group and expected a small group to show up, we were somewhat disappointed when the meet went 90 minutes longer than expected. Nethetheless, a good talk with Brahime about the murder and teenage pregnancy rates in Bridgeton passed a night that was otherwise characterized by mediocre performances. To start off the day, Michael Bruce dropped 6 seconds off his 3200 to hit 10:38, and continued to work on staying relaxed throughout the race. In the 800, and actually the 400 as well, the notable racer was no other than Chris “Elkan” Arnold, who dropped a competitive 2:09 in the half before nailing a 56.4! You’re a sprinter Arnold! Other highlights included Jared Athias’ first competitive meet since his injury and Ian Dunn’s big 400m to win his heat. Nice job boys.
Now here is Christian with the recap from the Armory that next Wednesday (1/30/13)
O wait he didn’t do it. Moving on. If anyone wants to do this for kicks, let me know
The Spring Track season officially starts in about 20 minutes. Let’s keep our streak alive.
Run Fast. Run Strong. Win.
Don’t just keep running; start winning: from daily struggles to the Meet of Champions, every day can be won.

MOCs & Eastern States

On Saturday, February 23rd, 2 of East's runners traveled to the biggest indoor stage in the state: the Meet of Champions. After advancing to states, both Dan Helfand (1600m) and Ben Dillon (3200m) moved on again to compete at MOCs. Over the past 2 meets, Dan's performances have placed him in the middle of the pack of East's living legends; as a sophomore, Dan's performances have also thrown him into the ranks of the top upperclassmen of the state; in 2 years, he'll be alone at the top. In a similiarly victorious form, Ben Dillon has developed one of the best and most infectious attitudes on the team, changing his previous questionable habits into paragons of excellence.

At MOCs, both runners beat their seed placements, as Ben Dillon dropped a 9:40 in the 3200m dash while Dan Helfand spotted a 4:29 in the 1600. The next Monday, however, both runners traveled to the Eastern Statesn Championship at the Armory along with Mike Minion; Minion and Ben qaulified for the 2-mile run while Dan qualified for the 1-mile run. As does occur every so often as the result of the mating of previous consistent performances and moderate fatigue, all runners posted slower times than their previous marks (with conversion); Dan posted a 4:38 (4:36 conv.), Ben a 9:55 (9:50 conv.), and Minion a 10:19 (10:14 conv.) Thus ends winter track for the distance team as spring track lies at the day break of that very next Friday, this Friday, tomorrow. To all, in all, do well this season.

Keep on Running

2/16/13 - Winter Track States

Although I was not in attendance at the bubble on the fateful Saturday, the most successful day for East Distance in my lifetime, I have heard enough about the race and have felt enough about the race from the confidence emanating from the runners who will be traveling to Meet some Champions this Saturday.

All around the board, CHHSE runners and jumpers aspired for greatest and perfection and most nearly achieved it; even our coach, Matthew "I ran a 16:24 on Holmdel" Cieslik referred to the day early on in the meet as "perfect".

On the distance side of the meet, Dan Helfand ran a different kind of race than that of the previous Sunday to  a huge 4:28, 6th place finish in the entirety of group 4 in the 1600. Purportedly, Dan fought it out with the leader nearly to the death, getting drug along to a 1 second pr and more importantly, a secured spot (33rd seed) at MOCs. You continue to impress, Double-B.
In the meantime, Ben Dillon ran yet another solid race, dropping 13 seconds from his previous at sectionals, to take 8th with a 9:44 and a qualifying spot (34th seed) at MOCs in the 3200. Nice job Ben, your attitude over the last few weeks has been unmatched (possible correlation?).

On the sprinter/jumper side of states, Jared Athias and Kyle Bryant matched their sectionals marks and moved on to MOCs, taking 3rd and 6th places with jumps of 6'02", respectively. Kevin Barry took a wildcard spot with 9th place in the 400m dash in 51.39, and will also be back in Tom's River this Saturday. The sole imperfection in the meet that nearly was such a paragon was the 4x400m relay which failed to qualify.

As I know both all of our runners will do well on Saturday, all that I can say is to DO SOMETHING. The way you bulls are running, you seriously look like you can't lose; do everything possible to get a point. Run to win, run to make a name for your team then yourself.

"He that shall see this day, and live old age, will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbors and say "Tomorrow is Saint Crispian." Then he will strip his sleeve and show his scars. Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot, but he'll remember with advantages what feats he did that day" (Henry V. IV. iii.47-52)

Saturday is Meet of Champs. Get some scars.

2/10/13: Indoor Sectionals

After a long time without posts, I’m going to post the championship updates and then give you my entire recap of the season, which will be augmented by Christian Mele’s VERY DELINQUENT contributions.
After more than 2 months of grueling winter training, 5 members of the Cherry Hill East Distance Team traveled up to Toms River for what could possibly be the final races of their seasons. Kicking off the day, Michael Minion, Jared Dashevsky, and Dan Helfand toed the line in the 1600m race. In a day whence all anticipatable variables had been prepared for and stressed tens of times, the slightest change had the potential to ruin any runner’s day. The placement of Dan Helfand in the 2nd fastest heat, 1 lower than that which purportedly composed all of the scoring competition and his teammates, could have easily sat back and resigned himself to the defeat of his goal of scoring. But on that day, I saw not a Dan Helfand racing without hope and only but for honor; I saw Dan Helfand running the greatest race of his life, a race of which only he could lose to himself. After a blazing first 400 that no one but Dan could keep up, Dan broke away from the pack, dropping 33 after 33. On the sidelines, everyone waited for him to slow down; after his first 800 in a 2:15, we hoped and prayed that Dan had it in him to at least hit 2 70s after to hit the typical qualifying time. Dan dropped a 2:14, giving him East’s fastest mile time since 2009 and a 4th place qualifying time for States. I don’t know how Dan was feeling during the race. I can’t say that he was trying harder than he had ever before. But that was the greatest race that I have ever seen. You’ll have to ask Dan about the rest.
The second (fastest) heat, however, did not go as smoothly.  As expected, the leaders of the race threw around the pace, going out hard just to slow down by the second lap. Mike and Jared posted times of 4:38 and 4:41, respectively and failed to qualify.
Later that day, Chris Arnold whinnied to the line of the 800m dash along with Kevin Barry. Coming to the line first, Brandon ran a great race, hitting splits of 30, 31, 32, and 31 for a solid and 0.3 s-away-from-qualifying 2:05. Take diving lessons and you’re there Chris! In a later heat, KBlanco pulled smoothly through for a solid 2:02, a nice pr and qualification for states to go along with his 400m pr.
Even later in the 3200, in the midst of 7 heats, Mike Minion and Dan Helfand came back for their second races of the day to join Ben Dillon in the 3200m. In their heat, the pack quickly separated, leaving the top runner to screw with his sole competitor for 15 laps while the rest of the field trailed them. Taking Dan under his wing, Ben Dillon led the pair at a consistent distance behind the 3rd man in the race and to final 4th and 5th finishes for respective qualifications. Beat up by his mile, however, Mike Minion fought the entire race and just missed a qualifying position, taking 7th.
Overall, the day at sectionals was rather dismal. The jumpers underperformed, the throwers embarrassed, and the sprinters had a mixed day.  Even had they had fantastic days, this day belonged to the distance team, in one of its best performances at track sectionals ever. Keep working hard boys.
Although it is now somewhat ironic for me to say keep on running,
Keep on Running.

Haddonfield Meet 1 - 12/11/12

Chris arnold here again. On tuesday the the cherry hill east track team traveled to a haddonfield scrimage with the exception of the top 7 distance runners. The distance events started off with the 800. Everyone did well to start off the season but the highlight was cherry hill east's pink-skinned sprinterKevin Barry running in his first ever 800 with a blazing time of 2:03 followed by chris arnold with a 2:09 michael wang with a 2:11 and aaron zucker with a 2:23. Next up was the mile. Brett Dash led east with a time in the 5:20s i believe. Also running well were bryan burt, maddy, allie, dor, matt statanmary and my boy Jon Lee! Next up was the 4x4. The team of Arnold, Wanger, Zucker and Warkala were not able to beat the sprinters but Pauls words of wisdom on the starting line got me real pumped up for the race. Due to the the destruction of the bubble our next meet will probaly be another haddonfield scrimage. So everyone get ready as we prepare to compete for another Sectional Title
